VALERIE
(
FIGHTERS DESTINY)

The official character

DESCRIPTION:

And here comes a new and unexpected cosplay :D

Another character that will be familiar only to old Nintendo 64 owners, as it's none other than one of the fighters from the console-exclusive 64-bit fighting game: Valerie from Fighters Destiny.

The N64 didn't have many fighting games—at least not ones that matched the quality of its competitors (like Tekken, though I never liked it much, preferring Killer Instinct and Soul Calibur). However, Fighters Destiny was definitely a title that, in terms of fun and the uniqueness of its point system and victory conditions, had nothing to envy. I spent entire afternoons challenging my friends in local multiplayer back in the day, although Killer Instinct 2/Gold remains my favorite fighting game.

Valerie was a great character, and her look seems to wink at Ivy from Soul Calibur.

It's a simple cosplay that required little effort. The idea struck me in a funny moment: I was putting on my boots to go out, but my computer was still on, and a Facebook post popped up from someone playing Fighters Destiny. When I saw Valerie, I thought, "Hey, I have the same boots!" That sparked the idea that I could create a cosplay and continue my mission of resurrecting characters and games from the past :D

I used materials I already had for most of the costume.
For the main outfit, I bought a sleeveless catsuit with a front zipper that was already very similar to Valerie's. I just shortened the pants and added white elastic borders. Then, I applied fabric to mimic the embroidery on her shoulders (it's subtle, but it's there), using material from an old pair of summer shorts I no longer wore.

In hindsight, I probably should have painted the embroidery with fabric paint for a more delicate and less obvious look—just a minor nitpick, but it works fine as is.
I crafted the waist belt out of foam, which helped it keep its perfect shape. I also made the white collar from foam, covering it with fabric. The little necktie was a lucky find at a discount store: I bought two, shortened and sewed them together like Valerie's, and secured them with the red strap.

The costume was practically complete—I just had to wait for the white wig to arrive. Although, to be honest, I'm not entirely happy with the cut (it's a bit off, and it should be slightly longer). I don't think this wig suits me very well, and since I'm not particularly beautiful, I feel I fit better with characters who exude more femininity—but I still wanted to make this cosplay.

I also want to mention that I'm not entirely satisfied with the photos I took this time. I've been struggling with my half-broken DSLR (I want to buy a new one, and I might even try to launch a crowdfunding campaign for it), so I apologize if the quality isn't on par with some of my other works. I also had a hard time adjusting the backgrounds this time, and not all the edits blend seamlessly or naturally, but I hope that Fighters Destiny fans will at least appreciate the effort. :)

Enjoy the gallery!
