SPRITEFALL LADY
(
Earth Defense Force)

DESCRIPTION:

Earth Defense Force is one of my favorite video game series: hordes of aliens and giant insects to defeat in a purely arcade-style experience. Chaos on screen, explosions, hundreds of missions, and the possibility to play cooperatively even locally with another player.
At the end of every victory, shouting
E! D! F!, you really feel like a hero!

I usually like to play as the
Wing Diver, but I have a soft spot for the Air Raider: I simply love that guy to death, I think I might even have a bit of a crush on him.
In the game he is often associated with a
mysterious female voice on the radio who coordinates the Air Raider’s satellite strikes. Her appearance is never shown in the game, but from her voice you can tell she has a charismatic and somewhat… crazy personality!

Fans like to call her “
Spritefall Lady” or “Mad Scientist.”
A scientist–operator who gets particularly excited about the devastating power of the Air Raider’s weapons, someone who would put science and data collection even before the lives of the soldiers:

“Even if you fail, the data will still be valuable.
Your sacrifice will contribute to our research.”

and of course:
“You have good taste, Air Raider!” after a bombardment.
Unfortunately, since the game isn’t dubbed or translated into my language, it’s sometimes difficult for me to follow all the dialogue lines during the missions, so I hope I did a good job and didn’t misrepresent the character. I’ve heard that in the original Japanese voice she sounds even more unhinged than in the English dub!

That’s how the idea came to me to imagine her as a
cosplay.
I find her voice quite sensual, so I liked the idea of giving her a somewhat bold and eccentric appearance.
I imagine her as a woman with experience in the scientific and technical field, not a young girl.
I gave her the classic white scientist’s lab coat to reference her interest in analyzing new alien species and collecting data. For the dress, I tried to create something with a hint of futurism (I originally thought about using metallic fabric, but in the end I chose a normal gray so it wouldn’t be too over the top).
I painted the shoes with the colors of the
EDF logo. I also decided not to wear a wig, because I thought my gray-blue hair streak at the time looked really nice as an extra distinctive trait :D
I had a lot of fun building part of the laboratory scenery myself, creating a piece of alien specimen (a fragment of a
Cosmonaut limb, the so-called giant “Greys”), complete with incision and internal nerves to examine with tweezers and a microscope.
Believe it or not, I even had a real microscope with a test tube containing a frog sample. It would have been perfect to reference the frog-like aliens in the game, but unfortunately I don’t know where it ended up, so I had to make do with a toy instead, ah ah...  :°D

As usual, I created several scenarios in post-production using my photo-manipulation skills, replacing the backgrounds and adding various effects so the character could be interpreted in different situations: in the laboratory while analyzing alien parts and researching new weapons, getting excited over Phobos bombardments, or congratulating the Air Raider for his excellent taste in orbital strikes :°D
All with a bit of irony to capture EDF’s wonderfully trashy sense of humor!

Oh, and the Air Raider doll from EDF 6 that you can see in some of the pictures is a custom I made myself. I love how accurately it came out <3

With that said, I hope fans of the series will enjoy this tribute. Everyone imagines Spritefall Lady in their own way, so I would be very happy if my interpretation is appreciated.
