PETRINE
(FIRE EMBLEM: PATH OF RADIANCE)
DESCRIPTION:
This was my first real experience with making armor!
It was way back in 2008, and materials like EVA foam or
Worbla were not yet so common in my town.
However, Petrine from Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance
(a tactis videogame for Nintendo Gamecube) was a cosplay that I really wanted to make, so I invented my own technique.
It was a more innocent way of thinking about cosplay, somehow, there were those who got by with simple papier-mâché and other cheap materials. Even if the result wasn't perfect and professional like the cosplays we're used to seeing today, just the fact of having created something yourself was a source of pride!
So, with pieces of chicken wire as a base and masking tape, I spent a long time making this armor.
I cut out large quantities of wire mesh, trying to shape it to give a similar shape to the various pieces to be worn, and covered it with layers of paper tape, shaping it like clay.
Finally I colored everything with acrylic paints and paint cans.
It was full of bumps, with a rough and unfinished appearance, but I remember that it had made its scene at the fair!
For the tailoring part, I have to thank my mother, who had the patience to sew for me (I'm always been rather inept with needle and thread)!
The wig was my worry: I had ordered a dark green one exactly like the color of Petrine's hair, but once it arrived, it was shorter and the color was totally different. I didn't have time to return it and buy another one, so I had to settle.
However, it is a costume with which I also feel a lot of bitterness: after so much work, it is sad that I never received the dozens and dozens of photos that people took of me during the convention (Lucca Comics 2008, Italy).
Even the photographers who had kept me for a good hour each to take actual sets, for some reason never sent me the photos.
I was very sad, because I hoped to be able to have some memories and have many images, after all the effort and after having always made myself available to pose with anyone who wanted to take photos with me.
The only few photos I have in this gallery are miserable stamps found here and there. A real sadness!
Later, I also lost my armor, so nowadays the desire remains to be able to do it again in the best possible way one day, but I know it would be very complicated... who knows!
